UNHCR has until now registered Muslim Persons of Concern from Myanmar adding bin and binti as well as their father’s name and such names appear on UNHCR identity documents. This practice was found in contradiction with the naming practice in Myanmar.
In consultation with the Government of Malaysia, it was decided that UNHCR will no longer use the terms bin and binti in UNHCR documentation. Muslim Persons of Concern will be registered with the name used in Myanmar.
This practice will take place with immediate effect. Thank you for your kind attention.
