Letter on Validity of Expired UNHCR Documents due to the COVID-19 Situation

Wednesday / 27 January 2021

As a result of the current COVID-19 situation and ongoing Movement Control Orders (MCOs), the UNHCR Office has not been able to proceed with some of our regular processing activities. This includes the timely renewal of expired UNHCR documents, or the replacement of lost or damaged UNHCR documents.

In light of this, the UNHCR Office has produced a letter confirming that UNHCR documents past their expiry date will remain valid until they are renewed. It is hoped that the letter will alleviate some of the challenges currently faced by refugees and asylum-seekers currently holding expired UNHCR documents.

Please take note that this letter does not serve as a replacement for a UNHCR document, and should not be used as such.

A printable version of the letter can be accessed by clicking on the button below. The letter can also be viewed as a PDF on smartphones.
