UNHCR has received reports of individuals on Facebook who claim to provide UNHCR cards, Under Consideration (UC) letters, and resettlement application letters in exchange for money, usually between RM50 to RM100. Through several Facebook posts, the individuals ask anyone interested in obtaining UNHCR documents to send their personal details to a WhatsApp and Viber number. The individuals claim to operate from Butterworth, Penang, and Kampung Cheras Baru, Kuala Lumpur.
This is a scam. These individuals are not connected to UNHCR and have no authority or ability to issue UNHCR documents. All UNHCR services are free. You cannot pay UNHCR staff or any individual to process your case for registration, Refugee Status Determination (RSD), resettlement, or any other purpose.
UNHCR will never ask you for money. Be careful of individuals claiming to be able to help you obtain UNHCR documents or access UNHCR processes in exchange for money. Do not share your personal information with them.
If you come across individuals claiming to be able to provide UNHCR services (UNHCR documents, registration, RSD, resettlement, etc.) in exchange for money, report this to:
- The police
- UNHCR using this form
Your UNHCR card will not be cancelled and your case will not be delayed or closed if you report suspicious activities to UNHCR.
