Adding QR code in UNHCR Documents

Wednesday / 17 August 2022

In order to enhance the security features and efficiency in verifying all UNHCR documents, including paper documents, as of 25th July 2022, UNHCR is issuing a new version of UNHCR documents to refugees and asylum-seekers. The Under Consideration (UC) letter and the Certified True Copy (CTC) letter issued to individuals who have lost their documents will include a QR code allowing the documents to be verified through the UNHCR Verify Plus mobile application available here on the Google Play Store and on the Apple Store.

Individuals that will be newly registered, as of 25 July, as well as those that come for the renewal of their expired documents or replacement of their lost documents at the Reception Centre will receive a new version of the UC letters or CTC with the QR code. For individuals with existing UC or CTC letters without the QR code, the documents will remain valid until the expiry date. UNHCR will not be replacing the existing documents with the new version containing QR codes.

For your reference, the sample of the new UC and CTC letters can be found here.

If you lose your UNHCR documents, you should notify UNHCR immediately using this form. Please be reminded that it is important for you to keep your UNHCR document securely as it demonstrates your identity and legal status according to UNHCR. Lost UNHCR documents will be deactivated immediately, and UNHCR Verify Plus application will be able to detect deactivated documents in order to prevent the misuse of lost documents.
